TDC Councillor for Bradley Ward Newton Abbot
Monthly update
As we are now about to enter the holiday period, things are beginning to be a little quieter.
Locally, activity has been mainly working on the A382 plans, the new traffic order for Highweek Village and the footpath/cycle way improvements on the A383.
The A382 plans are moving ahead with discussions with local land owners taking place. As all funding is in place the project is expected to start as soon as negotiations are completed.
I have tried to visit as many people as possible to discuss the Highweek Village traffic order. The feedback is very positive although there will be some inconvenience to residents affected by the closure of Whitehill Road and the Pitt Hill one way system. The Whitehill closure will become a permanent closure when the Linden Homes development starts at the end of the year as this was a requirement for the planning consent.
The foot path and cycle way improvements on the A383 are a welcome conclusion to many months of work by DCC, however the stretch from Mile End Road to the Taylor Wimpey roundabout are not part of the plans and need to be addressed as well.
Separately, the 30MPH limit on the A383 Is proposed to move to just after the island. I have requested that this is extended to past Cowslip Crescent as currently the current 60MPH limit is a danger to people entering or leaving Cowslip Crescent.
I continue to press developers to complete actions on the Mile End/Hele Park developments, although, at times it is like walking through treacle.
On a wider scale, I am proud to say that a member of the committee that works in Teignbridge and Exeter addressing the needs for homelessness provisions made by TDC we have received national recognition for our success in helping many families in difficulties over the past 2 years since Albany Street opened. A second facility is in the final stages of planning which will follow a similar philosophy and will be able to deliver more assistance to those who need it.
In my role a Portfolio Holder for Recreation and Leisure in Teignbridge, I have picked up the process of drawing up a strategic plan for both indoor and outdoor facilities across Teignbridge. This entails looking at current levels of provision and working to identify any gaps or areas where investment is required. This work will be taking place over the coming months so if you would like to make an input, whether you are a member of a sporting or recreational group please let me have your thoughts. I have already had discussions with a number of concerned people whose input has been valuable.
You may have seen the recent announcements about the South West Youth games that took place in Okehampton. This activity is organised by TDC and seeks to bring young people together in a sports related environment where they can participate in activities with others of similar ability to build individual confidence and personal esteem. It is not a meeting of the sporting elite, but having seen over 1000 young people taking part in sports designed to enable each to reach their own individual goals I was extremely impressed and will certainly be supporting future events.
I also visited all of our indoor leisure centres to learn about their plans for the future.
Subsequently, the rains came and the roof failed at the Dawlish Centre causing a major internal flood and electrical problems. The staff worked to ensure that the facilities were bought back into use with the minimum of delay.
I also met the team at Dawlish Warren to review their plans with them and saw the fantastic work being done on the beach reconstruction. If you have the chance it is well worth going to see what has been achieved and enjoy the sweeping sands and adjacent nature reserves.
Finally, the residents in the Fairways have organised a ‘Picnic on the Green Summer Fete’ taking place on the Larkspur Drive from 1.00pm on August 27th, your support will be appreciated, more details are available on The Fairways facebook page.
As usual,
If there is anything you would like to discuss, please call or email.
Regards
