Official figures show that the Conservative’s strong management of the economy means that the number of children in working households has reached a record high – and increased by 262,000 since last year. The proportion of children in a home with at least one adult in work is 91%.
The number of children in a workless household is a record low, down 760,000 since 2010, which is a drop of almost 40 per cent. This provides a route out of poverty and role model at home.
The total number of working households is 12.5 million, which is up over 1.5 million since 2010 and a 1.1 percentage point increase on the year.
In 2010, over 16 per cent of children were in a workless household. Today that figure is 9 per cent. This is down 0.5 percentage points on the year.
Almost 9 in 10 households now have a regular income. When the Conservatives took office in 2010, almost one-fifth of households in the UK were workless.
This comes after news last week that the unemployment rate is at a 45-year low and that wages have risen ahead of prices for the 20th consecutive month, meaning families have greater financial security and can plan for their future with confidence.
These figures showed that the number of disabled people in work is at a record high.
Combined with last week’s figures on GDP growth and employment, these figures today show that the UK’s economic fundamentals are strong despite the threat of a weak coalition government led by Corbyn’s Labour and two chaotic referendums next year.
Thérèse Coffey, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, welcomed these figures, saying:
““Thanks to the hard work of the British people and strong management of the economy, working households are at a record high. That means more families with more money to spend – a stark contrast to the £2,400 tax bill that a Labour government would land them with.
“Now we need to get Brexit done so we can unleash our full potential as a country while focusing on our schools, our hospitals and keeping our streets safe.
“Only a vote for the Conservatives on the 12th December will do that. The alternative is a Jeremy Corbyn Government stopping our country moving forward with more Brexit delay, more parliamentary gridlock, higher taxes and the chaos of two referendums in 2020.”
